Few Questions - Case Study

To aid my writing, I have posted a few questions on an internet forum specifically directed and hardcore/punk sub-cultures. The feedback I have received so far has been particularly useful as I now have informative direct case studies in which I can relate my writing to. Also I have consent from the users to use their words.

Jacob Bannon of Converge Interview

Interesting and inspiring interview from Jacob Bannon, vocalist of Converge and owner of Deathwish Records. He speaks mainly about the meaning of hard work, and how he has created something from nothing. The whole ethic and philosophy of DIY hardcore, does not just lay in the music itself. It becomes a lifestyle in which the individual clearly understands the importance of passion and productivity. Not falling into the trap of consumer value.

Phil Donahue - Marilyn Manson / Moshing

Another interesting documentary on Marilyn Manson and moshing. The term moshing has been derived from the violent dancing, that the audience takes part in at shows throughout alternative, metal and hardcore music. In general, there is a lot of criticism towards the lack of security at shows, causing a fatal casualty involving a boy losing his life due to lack of oxygen and the amount of people in such a confined space. That aside, there is a direct negativity towards the voice of Manson and his beliefs throughout his music, focussing directly on the negative side is something that can been seen across this sub-culture. Anything out of the norm is cast aside as wrong, without giving it a chance to show the real positivity that comes out from it all.

A few interesting points to say the least throughout this show, mainly the overpowering negativity towards the 'punkers' in question. The majority of the input from the audience seems to come across as a strict, con-formative social attitude formed by the already existing ideology of American society. Again when there is something out of place from this, or against this. It seems to be seen as wrong, inappropriate and incompetent. Realistically this is not the case, as many of the 'punkers' who have voiced there opinions are educated, working and feel that they should be accepted as themselves. Not for how they fashion themselves.
A few key points in which I found the most interesting were the use of DIY independent record labels, fan zines and the discovery of the Zerox printer stated by a representative music journalist. Alongside this the act of being violence seems to have peoples views dominating this towards the entire sub-culture and not specific people, as stated by 'punkers' in question. Old traditions seems to be hard to shake, considering the earlier age of this movement, communication seems to be the severe cause to parental misjudgement.
Bridging a gap through the organisation 'Parents of punkers' to me is a bit of a joke, in it's terms of achievement. Instead of coming to terms with a fashion statement, and ideology of belief. It has again been isolated as a problem in which a mother feels needs to be almost corrected, and no accepted.

Particularly as the majority of the general public seemed to have developed fals knowledge from sources that haven't exactly gone in favour for it at all. Amongst the naivety of the youth, you can see a strong voiced opinion against the media. A major point being defined into a category, something that still stands today. If you are not fitting into a social structure, you become and outcast, seen as a menace of the unknown.

About Looking : John Berger - Research / Quotes
During the summer break, I did get round to reading what I could get my hands on from my local library. The only theorist in my reach was John Berger, someone who I have meaning to look into for a while. The extracts below are from his book ' About Looking' applying a westernised theoretical approach to art, photography and why we perceive an image the way we do. This is particularly interesting to myself and also my dissertation.
Focussing on the visual aesthetic and D.I.Y culture of hardcore punk music, I want to utilise my existing knowledge with theorists that can be applied to my writing. Berger being one of those.

Dissertation Tutorial - One

Notes taken from my tutorial with Amber yesterday afternoon. This has helped me to no end, in understanding exactly how I should be approaching my dissertation. Honestly I felt a bit unclear, as to what I should be looking at but now I need to be focussing on the history of hardcore music, mass media and culture, aesthetics and theorists who have wrote about consumerist society. Alongside this I need to investigate a case study between two people, to gather primary research. As opinions on my chosen subject matter will aid my writing, I feel that this is the best approach to take.

Current Reading List
At the moment I am in the process of reading a number of different books, that are currently allowing myself to understand different aspects of the working class & methods of seeing. By doing this I am able to pull quotes, generate a knowledge base and further develop my own critical understanding of my chosen subject matter.

Although three of the titles above are not listed on my dissertation reading list, I have found it difficult to pull together some of the books I have needed for my dissertation studies. Saying that, with these I feel I can generate a greater understanding of particular subjects, whether relevant or not. And still further develop knowledge.

Outline / Draft Dissertation Title
The main idea behind my dissertation proposal is to focus directly within all aspects of design, that has surrounded the sub-cultue over the years. With the uprising of modern technology, advancements in society and the capitalist political world it surrounds. As this is my main interest besides design and illustration. I want to continue to pursue and develop my understanding of identity it creates around the influence produced by the artists. Furthermore, with this incorporate my design work within.
